The Four Agreements

Updated: Jul 26, 2024

"The Four Agreements" is a transformational book written by Don Miguel Ruiz, which aims to provide readers with a practical guide to personal freedom and happiness. The book is based on ancient Toltec wisdom and focuses on four agreements that can transform the way we think, communicate, and interact with others.

First Agreement - Be Impeccable With Your Word: This agreement emphasizes the importance of being truthful and authentic in our communication with ourselves and others. We should speak with integrity, avoid using words to harm others yourself, and use our words to spread love and positivity. Say only what you mean.

Second Agreement - Don't Take Anything Personally: This agreement encourages us to not take things personally, to not take things that others say or do as a reflection of ourselves. When someone says or does something that upsets us, it is not necessarily about us, but rather about their own personal issues and perspectives. When you are unaffected by the opinions and actions of others, you will be free from the pointless suffering.

Third Agreement - Don't Make Assumptions: This agreement encourages us to avoid making assumptions about others' intentions or motivations. We should seek clarification, ask questions, and communicate clearly to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. This alone can change your life.

Fourth Agreement - Always Do Your Best: Your best is going to change from moment to moment. This agreement reminds us to always strive to do our best, no matter the circumstances. It encourages us to be present, to focus on the task at hand, and to not be too hard on ourselves if we fall short of our goals. Simply do your best, and you will avoid self judgement, self abuse and regret.

By following these agreements, Ruiz believes that we can break free from limiting beliefs, negative thought patterns, and toxic relationships. We can experience personal freedom and happiness by living in accordance with these principles.
